20 Tank was blessed to have a great line of brewers throughout its existence.  Scott James took the brewery for about 3 years until December 1999, leaving for a job at White Labs in San Diego.

Bert Boyce took over after Scott.  Bert is a graduate of U.C. Davis's brewing program, as well as having a degree in fermentation science.  Bert is from Oceanside, California.

He brewed at Sudwerk in Davis for about 3 years under Dave Sipes.  Bert developed great lager brewing skills, but wanted to be the head brewer somewhere, so he moved to Portland to give it a shot.

He didn't have much luck in Portland, but luckily, the 20 Tank opportunity became available.  He flew down for the day to do a brew with Scott (the '99-'00 Old St. 'Nick), and met with Dow and John Martin.  Dow and John saw greatness in Bert and offered him the job.

Luckily that turned out to be a great move.  Bert didn't hesitate to impress everyone at the pub.  His brown ale was the best I have ever had.  The rest of the beers he brewed were also excellent.

Bert currently brews at Drake's Brewery (formerly Lind) in San Leandro.

Sean Carlson was the assistant brewer at 20 Tank.  Sean brewed with both Scott and Bert.  Sean got his start in the kitchen at 20 Tank.  He is best known for his soup and chili.

Sean quickly developed an interest in brewing, and in enjoying the beer he made.

Sean is currently a cook at a local restaurant.
