Female Beer Superiority - Now, I may be going out on a limb with this one, and I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I think this is actually a totally common and appropriate happening. I actually may offend more men than women. I was at Magnolia on Valentine's Day, enjoying my usual 4 or 5 pints of Prescription, when a couple walked in for dinner. The tables were full, so they stepped up to the bar for a couple of pints. The woman was telling the man about the beers on tap. The guy was thinking about the Proving Ground, but the woman talked him out of it, because she knew it would be too hoppy and bitter for him. She talked him into a Blue Bell Bitter, while she had a Prescription. Boy I love those women. Meanwhile, there were two women next to me that were enjoying a Big Cypress Brown and a Cole Porter. I had great women all around me. The stout drinking, hop loving women of the world reassure me that women are actually beer lovers. Now you have to understand, I ride motorcycles (which, unfortunately is a male dominated community), I drink beer (which there are only two women brewers in the entire Bay Area), and I'm 6'5", and there's entirely too few tall women in this world. I exist in multiple cultures that are under represented by women. And I hate it. So when I see women come into a brewpub and explain to men the difference between cask beer and tap beer, or Proving Ground and Spud Boy, I really appreciate it. And the question is, in a male dominated craft, how awesome are fully educated, bitter beer, stout beer loving women?!?! And how whimpy are the men they sometimes travel with? Now simply asking that last questions assumes I think men are supposed to be beer lovers. I don't actually believe it, but it really does seem to be the way it is in this country. Beer advertising is geared towards men, and the general perception is that beer is kind of a blue collar type of beverage, which is enjoyed by blue collar men. I totally don't think so. I think women and men are equally inclined to ride motorcycles, and equally inclined to drink great beer. I always appreciate women that drink great beers. I work in a place where a lot of women ask for the Blonde Ale (BudMillerCoors type of beer), so when the stout loving women come in, I totally appreciate it. I also love the women that love the really hoppy beers. Not just because they are rare, but also because they appreciate the same types of beers I do. (and if they ride motorcycles, that's even better). As for the women that outdo their men in beer drinking, I think they are the best. Any of those women can feel free to contact me. So the whole point is that perceptions and reality point to not enough women beer drinkers. I know they exist, and I see them often, but not enough. So when I see it, I love it. |
